How to Improve Pain, Sickness, or Fevers without Medication

When you're sick, exhausted, or in pain it's tempting to want to take a pill, drug, or even consider surgery if you've been dealing with symptoms for some time — but is that truly the best option to improve your health?

Medications and surgery can be life-saving, but aren't always necessary. They don't address the root cause of why you feel that way in the first place. They offer a quick fix that temporarily suppresses symptoms and keeps you dependent on them to function, while potentially causing negative side effects that might show up as different health problems in the future.

So the next time you aren't feeling well and are tempted to take medication to fix the problem, ask yourself these two questions:

  1. If I take this action, what will the possible negative consequences be? What does that medication do to my long-term health? Are there any known repercussions? (Actually do the research and you'll be surprised.)

  2. What can I do to support my body and organ systems that will promote optimal health so it can heal itself, fight illness, and adapt to stress as needed? (Our blog is a great resource.)

In most cases, health conditions can be helped and healed by making sure your nervous system, immune system, and gut are functioning well, which has a positive ripple effect on the rest of your body and well-being.

What's in a Chiropractor's Medicine Cabinet?

So what does a chiropractor keep on hand to treat common illnesses, aches, or wounds that are naturally derived and won't increase the chemical burden in your body?

Natural Ways to Treat a Fever

Although fevers are not pleasant to experience, they are actually your friend - not your foe. Fevers are your body's innate defense mechanism against infection and are needed to trigger an increase of white blood cells that help you fight off infections faster and inhibit the growth of viruses and bacteria.

If your child has a fever, the goal should be making them comfortable and boosting immune function, NOT reducing the fever.

  • Stay Hydrated: Water, ice chips, electrolytes (with no sugar, artificial sweeteners, or food dyes), herbal tea, and naturally-sweetened popsicles all work. It's important to avoid caffeine as it dehydrates you.

  • Dress Lightly: Wear light-weight clothing and use light blankets to stay cool while resting.

  • Take an Epsom Salt Bath: Epsom salt provides the body with hydration and magnesium while also drawing toxins from your body. Add 2 cups of Epsom salts to a warm (not cold) bath and soak (10-15 minutes for children and 20-30 minutes for adults).

  • Prioritize Rest: Rest is one of the most important steps to faster recovery when sick. Just because your child is running a fever doesn't mean they will feel tired. Therefore, try to limit physical activity and encourage extra naps during the day.

  • Chiropractic Adjustments: Consistent chiropractic care reduces nerve interference within the body, allowing our innate immune system to activate and function at its peak potential. When your body is functioning well, you feel well too!

  • Drink High-Quality Bone Broth: Bone broth is a rich source of glutamine, potassium, and magnesium, which can help shorten the duration of a cold or flu. It's also full of amino acids which work together to boost your immune system. The amino acid, glycine, helps increase antioxidant status in your cells to fight infection.

  • Immune-Boosting Supplements: Echinacea, elderberry syrup, Vitamin C (whole-food sources preferred), and colloidal silver are all good options.

Story of Healing: Mariesa

When Mariesa first came to Restore, she had been struggling for 3 years with bloating, painful cramps, and low back pain. Those issues would often interfere with her ability to be present and have fun with her son. After a short time of TRT adjustments at Restore, Mariesa's back pain was gone, she no longer had gas and cramps after eating, her shoulders were not nearly as tight, and the low back pain she would get during her cycle didn't occur anymore!

These changes have significantly improved her ability to be more active, fun, and energetic with her son and the children she works with. She can't remember the last time she took pain meds and loves that she can snuggle her son for long periods of time without low back pain.

Plain and simple: Chiropractic care can help you avoid unnecessary drugs and surgery by addressing the master control center of your entire body — the nervous system. If you want true healing and long-term health, get your nervous system checked, adjusted, and back on track!
