Headache Relief

Headache Relief

Over 35 million Americans suffer from migraines, so it’s probably no surprise that migraine relief makes the list of the top 3 reasons why people seek chiropractic care. (The other two reasons being low back pain and neck pain).

Migraines and other types of headaches may be common, but they are NOT NORMAL. If you experience headaches on a regular basis that’s a SIGN of a DEEPER ISSUE hiding elsewhere in the body.

So rather than temporarily MASK pain through various prescription medications (that come with unwanted side-effects and increase chemical stress in the body) we believe in getting to the ROOT CAUSE of what’s triggering migraines in the first place. That way you can HEAL your body and prevent migraines from occurring in the first place.

So let’s dig into what causes migraines and non-medical approaches to heal your body so you can say goodbye to throbbing head pain, light sensitivity, or nausea that keep you from enjoying life and getting work done.

What Causes Migraines?

Migraines are thought to be caused by the constriction of certain microscopic blood vessels in the head supplying nerve tissue with oxygenated blood. This constriction decreases blood flow to the nerves which cause the nerve tissue to elicit a pain response.

Increased inflammation in the body (caused by diet and lifestyle factors) also affects normal blood flow and the blood vessels that reach the brain, which can lead to migraines.

Other Possible Triggers

  • Dehydration

  • Food sensitivities

  • Stress

  • Fatigue

  • Hormone imbalance

  • Too much sugar

  • Caffeine and alcohol

How Does Neurologically-Based Chiropractic Care Help?

Neurologically-based chiropractic care delivers gentle, specific adjustments that take pressure and stress OFF the nervous system in the upper neck and spinal cord. This aids in proper flow of blood through microvascular as well as proper removal of cellular waste that can cause improper nerve stimulation. Chiropractic adjustments also improve your body’s stress response by guiding your nervous system to a more calm, balanced state.

By removing nerve interference in the brain-body communication pathway and supporting healthy blood flow and muscle function, your body can adapt well to stress and prevent debilitating migraines.

What Else Can You Do to Prevent Headaches?

Acupuncture: The needles stimulate nerves to release certain pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins, change the flow of energy through the body, and increase blood circulation.

Biofeedback: Using special technology to monitor muscle tension and skin temperature, you learn how to observe and modify your body’s reaction to stress so you can prevent or reduce headaches from occurring.

Decrease Stress: Ideas include: Start your morning in prayer, go for daily 20 minute walk outside, take 15 minutes to relax and do something for yourself each day, journal, read your Bible, be still while breathing slowly and deeply for 2 minutes, spend time in nature.

Reduce Inflammatory Foods: Major offenders include sugar, gluten, dairy and industrial seed oils (like vegetable, canola, and safflower oil). The easiest way to limit these foods is avoid processed, packaged foods and cook from scratch.

Supplement with Magnesium: Magnesium is involved in hundreds of cellular functions that impact total body health, including relaxing muscles. When magnesium levels are low there are significant changes in the release of brain chemicals, called neurotransmitters, that play a pivotal role in the frequency and severity of migraine headaches.

Limit Screen Time and Prioritize Sleep: Staring at a computer screen, phone or other electronic devices for hours each day causes eye strain which signals your autonomic nervous system that you’re in a state of stress, making it more difficult to tap into your parasympathetic side (where you rest, digest, and heal). It’s best to turn off all electronic devices 1 hour before bed and get 7 - 9 hours of sleep on a consistent basis. Another helpful practice if you work on computers several hours a day is to take a 10 minute walking break every hour (or as often as your job allows) to reduce eye and neck strain, improve blood flow, and reduce back tension.

Stay Hydrated: Drink half your ideal body weight in ounces each day.
